Because she traveled so often, Melinda traveled light. With the increased security after 9-11, luggage seemed to move faster and more securely, so she used one medium sized suit case for her clothes. Jeans, simple shirts and one nice dress fit easily in the bright pink case. No one else ever reached for it.
Beyond that she carried one bag on the plane. A simple messenger style bag, she carried the same things in it she always did. Her laptop, some pads and pens, a travel guide for wherever she was going, her money and ID, and a change of top and underwear. Practical and boring but it meant she could go anywhere in a pinch. Her mother had been appalled until she heard about the clean panties.
Thing was, she didn't travel for fun. She wasn't out to make an impression or take on the world. She was working and, in the end all, she needed was in that messenger bag. With it and her imagination she could face anything, do anything, that she needed to.
It wasn't war she prepared for, but it still gave her peace of mind.
